In an intra-league bout some thought might favor the Psycho Ex-Girlfriends, the Huntington Heartbreakers convincingly defeated their opponents 97 to 55. After a scoreless first jam, the Heartbreakers took the lead and never looked back.
The Psychos only trailed by 14 at the half with the score at 45 to 31. But the relentless Heartbreaker defense proved to be too ...<< MORE >>

TRUE LIFE: OC Roller Derby includes crazy names, mayhem and, yes, a mission statement.

The girl who sits next to you in class may look like the average college co-ed. On the other hand, she could be one of the fishnet-wearing, miniskirt-sporting, body-checking OC Roller Girls. The county's fledgling league blazed on to the local derby scene less than two years ago and has begun to make its mark with bouts and bruises.
Roller derby, that mythical sport where beauty meets brawn in a contest of speed, skill, guts and performance, is currently enjoying a renaissance. Once relegated to 1970s period films such as "Boogie Nights," defunct TV shows and retirement due to the loss of roller skating rinks, derby is back. The Orange County league began with five girls and has blossomed with over 60 members.
The league is made up of a variety of women, including professionals, real estate agents, an assistant district attorney, nurses, a chiropractor, mothers and even a Cal State Fullerton student.
Sarah Sanchez, a sociology major, is a recent addition to the OC Roller Girls. Sanchez's cousin, a roller girl named "Strychnine," invited her to check out the teams. After Sanchez witnessed a derby match, she was hooked.
Sanchez recently completed skills testing, a series of tests designed to measure a skater's agility, ability to fall safely, avoid injury and safely maneuver around other players.
"Before they get into something like a match they have to know how to fall, crossover going around a turn, and jump over obstacles," Brik Wall, captain of the Back Bay Bombshells, said.
The testing required of all skaters is just one of the little-known aspects of the sport.
Some people think roller derby is a bunch of "slutty" women on roller skates beating each other up. But many preconceived notions about derby, including the amount of skill, practice and strategy that go into practice and competition, do not reflect reality.
In fact, derby is a fully regulated sport with rules, strategies and limitations on unnecessary violence. Winning a derby bout requires more than brute force.
"Actually, it's a skilled game. You aren't just out there hitting each other. Elbows aren't allowed," Wall said.
Points, penalties and statistics are tallied by officials. Referees enforce the rules of the game and assign penalties.
"There are pack refs and jam refs," D-Mann, referee and coach for the league said, referring to the different jobs of the referees.
D-Mann became involved in roller derby because of his passion for roller skating.
"I began skating in first grade. I fell in love with it and started competing in speed skating," D-Mann said. "A friend of mine joined the derby league and said 'You gotta come see our bout.' I saw the refs in the middle and said 'I gotta get involved in this!' I fell in love with it as something I can do [that] I enjoy as a hobby. I love being on my roller skates."
D-Mann also runs some of the practice sessions for the OC Roller Girls.
The roller girls practice three times a week, working on endurance, skills and scrimmages.
Another difference to the preconceived notions of derby is the track itself. The OC Roller Girls and many other U.S. leagues are part of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. Instead of a banked plywood track, they play on flat surfaces and the boundaries are marked by tape, rope lights or cones instead of metal railing. The banked track's wooden floor is more flexible, cushioning falling skaters. The flat track floors, made mostly of concrete, are very unforgiving.
Flat track requires more skill and power than a sloped track. Players use only their own strength to create momentum and stay in bounds.
An added bonus to the flat track is that instead of running into the bars at the edge of the rink, flat track players tend to run into audience members seated just outside the boundaries. Sometimes audience participation is not a choice.
Names are a big deal in derby. The OC Roller Girls league is divided into four teams: the Back Bay Bombshells, the Psycho Ex-Girlfriends, the Huntington Heartbreakers and the Anaheim Aces. Even more important than the team names are the names for the individual derby girls.
New members, dubbed "fresh meat" by the veterans, must select a derby name. This is a monumental decision for them as they only call each other by their derby names.
Derby girls have kitschy, creative, attention-grabbing names. Some names are spoofs on movie titles, such as roller girl Titty Titty Bang Bang. Others use plays on words and the jersey numbers, such as "Ivanna Cocktail #60 Proof." Sanchez has already selected her new name, Fat Bottom Basher, a combination of a song by her favorite band, Queen, and something a little threatening, Basher.
The next event for the Roller Girls is Rolling for a Cure. The event, scheduled for Saturday, May 10, will benefit the Keep A Breast Foundation, which benefits breast cancer prevention and treatment. The roller girls place a priority on being active in the community and charitable events.
"The one common thing among us is that we all respect each other," Brik Wall said. "Respect for everything [we are] doing and everything [we] stand for."
The OC Roller Girls welcomes anyone who would like to be their "fresh meat" to attend an orientation meeting.
"If you have any questions, please feel free to ask," Heather, who is also known as "Lollerskates," said.

As 2008 draws to a close and communication devices continue to evolve, the 1928 invention we've come to know as the "television" continues to deliver not only entertainment, but also a visual display of events and interactions around the world. It is largely thanks to this invention that most people are aware of a coastal cluster of cities approximately halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego known as Orange County. BATTLE ON THE BASE ON SEPT 27TH
After a disappointing and abrupt cancelation in July, the OC Roller Girls have been lying low plotting their next top-secret mission. Thanks to an unnamed informant, word is they will soon merge in full-force to take back the county in style... Come Saturday, September 27, grown men will cower in fear as the OC Roller Girls militia descends upon the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Base with a daunting main mission: to defiantly bring roller derby back to Orange County. Their game plan is simple: showcasing their athleticism and prowess in an action-packed DOUBLE HEADER, BATTLE ON THE BASE is sure to entertain!
Game one kicks off at 6:00pm accompanied by the determined battle cries of OCRG's Travel Team (Orange Crushers) of wheeled warriors facing challengers from the LA Derby Dolls. These banked track girls won't know what (or who) hit them as they're shown firsthand the undying will of the flat-track phenomenon. Game two pits OCRG's newly formed Wheel Housewives against the Inland Empire Derby Divas, third time challengers of OCRG.
Meanwhile, our newest recruits will be on a side mission of their own, to lead the charge in raising funds for our featured charity, the Wounded Warrior Project. Fans and patrons are invited to join the OC Roller Girls in positively impacting the community by donating funds to this non-profit group that provides support for servicemen injured in battle.
Morbidly curious spectators are welcome to witness the mayhem, with doors opening at 5:00pm for early onlookers to browse our varied vendors and commandeer the best seats; the first jam whistle for game one sounds off at 6:00pm. Those who survive the vicious battles are encouraged to partake in the victorious celebration immediately following the second game.

The Girls Next DoorBy Rose Flores Medlock
The social forces behind the resurgence of roller derby across the country may be hard to explain, but the urges driving the trend in Orange County seem simple enough: “I have always liked skating and sports in general,” Jennifer “Hurt in a Skirt” Scruggs- Carrillo says. “There are not many organized women’s sports, [so] when I found out about derby, I knew it was for me. [It] gives me the opportunity to be tough but sassy at the same time. Also, the relationships that I’ve built with the girls is what keeps ...<< MORE >>

Rollergirls: Strychnine
![]()
If there was only one thing that I could teach you about the women of roller derby, it's that they're athletes. Women as a whole are largely regarded as being un-feminine if they're good at a sport or strangely expected to uphold femininity to a bizarre extreme while playing sports at the same time. I've been asked why I'm not interested in watching the standards like basketball or football and to that I say: The day that men are expected to play while wearing make-up and fishnets in combination with their pads is the day that I find that sport more interesting. And on with the show...
![]() Rollergirl Name: StrychnineNumber: #9 Team: OCRG (Orange County Roller Girls) Inter-league Classification: Psycho Ex-Girlfriends Position: All, but mostly pivot and blocker Height: 5'6" Age: 27 Romantic Status: Boyfriend
Favorite Movie? SLAPSHOT
What got you interested in roller derby? Violence and Roller Skates!
What's been your biggest injury so far? Broken Finger
What's one of your favorite memories from a bout? Winning Reno. The odds were against us, we were short handed, cold (playing outside), at a high elevation and couldn't breathe, and somehow won. We went totally nuts.
What's the hardest part of playing? Dedicating the all the time needed to keep the league running and get all the practice in.
Is there anything about the sport you wish more people understood? That we are not paid, and in fact pay dues to keep it going.
Do you tend to play a character while skating or is what you put out on the rink pretty much your own personality? Playing a character depends on the type of game. Travel games that rank us, I take pretty seriously, but interleague games all about fun and playing for the crowd. Exaggerated penalties always get them going, as does hitting a girl into the crowd.
What's your personal derby/life motto? "That's going to leave a mark" / "Some folks like the water. Some folks like the wine. I like the taste of straight strychnine"
To keep up to date with Strychnine and the OCRG, you can add their profile at Myspace. You can also add the Psycho Ex-Girlfriends profile there as well. Not Myspace inclined? You can check out the league's main website as well, www.ocrollergirls.com.
The OCRG is also accepting donations from fans in order to help keep the girls properly outfitted in the correct protective gear. Click here to donate via PayPal. Even better, if you're from Orange County (or anywhere close by in the Southern California area, make sure to come to the bouts. Fan support isn't just appreciated in the form of dollars. It's the screaming and chanting of the fans that can get a player back up on her feet after a spill. A sport where you're not breathing the thin air from cheap, high stadium seating? Where you can see the blood up close on the rink? Yeah, tell me that's not better than those "standard" sports.

Bustin' Out at Santa Ana's Grand Central Art Center With the "Roll for a Cure" Show
Bustin’ out all over at Grand Central Art Center
By GREG STACY
Thursday, May 22, 2008 - 3:00 pm
Show Us Your Tits (For Charity) Bustin’ out all over at Grand Central Art Center
Poor Matthew Price. He’s a very interesting young artist, and his work is improving all the time. Some months back, we gave his show at the Office a rave in these pages, and under normal circumstances, we’d be more than happy to devote a full column to hyping “Sweet Unrest,” his current show at the Grand Central Art Center.
But we must confess that this time, through no fault of his own, Price failed to really grab our attention. You see, his latest show is running simultaneously with another show, “Roll for a Cure” (both close this Sunday), which is made up almost entirely of female titties. Titties to the left of you, titties to the right, big ones, small ones, the floppy and the firm, all painted up in crazy colors, with little faces on the nipples and stuff. More than 20 artists contributed to “Roll for a Cure,” and it’s a strange and wondrous thing—a Russ Myer-esque fever dream, a veritable boobsapalooza.
And then there’s poor Price, trying to get noticed in the middle of all that. Sorry, buddy, but even art critics are not immune to certain mammalian imperatives.
“Roll for a Cure” features plaster casts of the breasts of members of the OC Rollergirls roller-derby team, and these casts have been painstakingly decorated by such artists as Niccole Ugay and Sean Bristol. Now, when you’re presented with a show like this, there’s a regrettable temptation to just get silly—to go crazy with the titty puns and focus on the bosoms rather than the busts (that is, to sniggeringly treat these pieces like sex objects, rather than to seriously appraise them as art objects). But this is a show with brains, as well as great knockers.
Setting aside the loveliness of the boobs as boobs, there are some really striking visuals here. Thomas Griego takes the breasts of roller queen Jacqueline Hyde and turns them into a kind of storybook wonderland—a fairy village with lush trees and little drawer things that pull out of the nipples. Hyde gave him some sweet material to work with, but Griego has certainly made the most of it, lavishing his imagination across the boobs, along the ribs, and even on the inside of the cast, where he’s got some playing cards stashed away. Ladies, something tells us Griego is a fellow who will treat you right—he takes the whole “your body is a wonderland” thing very seriously.
Some of the art here is intentionally kitschy, like the kooky Elvis makeover that Ivanna S. Pankin gives to the swingin’ neckbreakers of Disco Dervish. But many of these pieces are lovely by any measure, like the flaming mosaic design that Kristin Matthews applies to the spectacular endowments of Brik Wall. (Can we lift our moratorium on bad titty puns long enough to make a crack about how this is our idea of a National Endowment for the Arts? No?) Chela and Joseph Bañuelos make a really nice “Milagros Medley” on the petite frame of Baby Sister; it sort of looks like what would happen if Frida Kahlo had gone into business designing high-class bustiers.
The show benefits the Breast Cancer Angels and the Keep-a-Breast Foundation (see, even the charity organizations can’t resist the titty puns), so in addition to the can’t-miss proposition of ogling boobs at the same time you experience some fine art, if you buy one of these pieces, you might actually help save a life. And while you’re in a charitable mood, go over and give Price’s stuff some merciful oohs and ahhs. Once again, he takes us into a Tim Burton-like world of Goth cutie-pies, featuring a lot of girls with big, round heads and their oversized, staring eyes full of sinister secrets. Price’s girls are consorting with creepy cats, little birds and other fuzzy, feathered things. And there are gas masks. It’s arguably the stuff of Goth cliché, but it’s also stylish and fun in its own glum, Hot Topic way. Price deserves your attention.
Yeah, we’re still thinking about the boobs, too.
“Sweet Unrest” and “Roll for a Cure” at the Grand Central Art Center’s Rental & Sales Gallery, 125 N. Broadway, Santa Ana, (714) 567-7233; www.grandcentralartcenter.com. Call for hours. Through Sunday.
