OC Roller Girls Prepared for a Double Disco Demolition

Home Teams Take on Ventura and Santa Maria in Disco-Themed Double-Header

Orange County’s own “bunnies” from Huntington Heartbreakers will boogie down with the roller girls from Ventura, the West Coast Derby Knockouts, and OC’s “fly” Back Bay Bombshells will jive with the Santa Maria Ruff Rollerz in an all-night derby disco.

Doors open at 5:00 p.m., the first bout starts at 6:00 p.m. and the second bout starts at 7:30 p.m. Immediately following the second bout, there will be a skate session with the derby girls open to everyone, except squares! Bring your own skates... a few pairs will be available to rent ($2).

In addition to awesome derby, there will be a DJ spinning disco hits and a 70s costume contest! Proceeds from raffles and a silent auction will go to Life House Ministry of Orange County, a local food bank that feeds 500 homeless people each month.

Food, beer and merchandise will be available for purchase. All ages welcome. Tickets available online or at the door. Donate a pair of new socks and receive $2 off the price of admission!

How to Play

Roller Derby is not just a glamour contest or a staged sideshow – a lot of skill and training goes into this sport. Two teams of five players face off on the track, each team consisting of four blockers and a jammer. Jammers score points by passing members of the opposing team. Blockers try to stop the opposing jammer from passing them, while also pushing around the opposing team’s blockers to help their own jammer score. (Did we mention they’re also going flat-out on roller skates?) The action is fast, ferocious, and non-stop!

About the Orange County Roller Girls

Established in June 2006, the Orange County Roller Girls are Orange County’s league of all-female flat track roller derby skaters. The league is skater owned and operated by over 60 very diverse women who have one very strong bond in common: roller derby! These women encompass a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, shapes, and skill levels. Not only do the women of OCRG work hard and train hard to be fearless skaters, they also share their strong sense of community off the rink devoting their time to various fundraising and community services

BOUT RECAP 9/5/09 PEG's vs HHB's

In an intra-league bout some thought might favor the Psycho Ex-Girlfriends, the Huntington Heartbreakers convincingly defeated their opponents 97 to 55. After a scoreless first jam, the Heartbreakers took the lead and never looked back.

The Psychos only trailed by 14 at the half with the score at 45 to 31. But the relentless Heartbreaker defense proved to be too much. After holding the Psychos scoreless for five consecutive jams in the first half they came back in the second half and dealt out another crushing seven consecutive jam shutout.

All in all, the Psychos were held scoreless for 24 of the 38 total jams. But the Psycho defense can not be overlooked as they shutout the Heartbreakers in 17 jams. The high scoring jammer for the Heartbreakers was Kina Wahine with 30 points while Wrecky led the Psycho jammers with 20 points.

What is Roll For A Cure?

What started as a personal mission to raise funds became one of the most rewarding experiences our league shares & we need your help. At the 3rd Annual Roll For A Cure on June 20, 2009 we will raise funds for Breast Cancer Angels.

OC Roller Girls & our friends, family & sponsors donate for the raffle to be held at the event. From boobie cupcakes to sports tickets- everyone walks away with souvenirs & information on how to do their breast exams!!

This year we host a double header with our own Orange Crushers vs. AZ Roller Derby & our Wheel Housewives of OC vs. Bakersfield Diamond Diva’s. We will donate $1.50 from every regular priced bout ticket purchased, $3 from every RFAC shirt sold & 100% of raffle proceeds to the BCA.

Who are the Breast Cancer Angels? (WE ARE BY RAISING FUNDS!!!)

Breast Cancer Angels is a local non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that financially assists women, men & now girls who are in treatment for breast cancer. They provide food certificates, offer rental & utility assistance & help with medical co-pays & have also paid for hospice & final expenses. Many of these women have children & they assist with school supplies & clothing. (They are currently assisting the family of a 10 year old girl who is being treated for breast cancer). Her story was on yahoo news a few days ago.

They are a volunteer organization & funds are raised primarily through individual donations & fundraising events. 100% of these funds go directly to patient needs. They assist women in Orange, Los Angeles & San Diego Counties & the surrounding areas. All donations will be considered fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law & every little bit helps.

Roller Derby Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Angels June 20, 2009
We need your help to continue our work. On Saturday, June 20th, the OC Roller Girls are having our annual “ROLL FOR THE CURE” at The Rinks in Huntington Beach.

Who are the OC Roller Girls?
The mission of the OC Roller Girls is to make a positive difference in the lives of women and youth. We firmly believe the sport of roller derby is a catalyst for profound change and enrichment—not to mention camaraderie and exercise. We believe in the value of the individual, the strength of the team, and the power of the female spirit. Since the founding of our league, we have held a strong sense of community and have dedicated support, time and donations to various local organizations. The OC Roller Girls encourage all of its members to devote time and resources to assisting non-profit organizations in our community.

Who are the Breast Cancer Angels?
Breast Cancer Angels is a local non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that financially assists women, men and now girls who are in treatment for breast cancer. They provide food certificates, offer rental and utility assistance and help with medical co-pays and have also paid for hospice and final expenses. Many of these women have children and they assist with school supplies and clothing. (They are currently assisting the family of a 10 year old girl who is being treated for breast cancer). Every need is considered.

They are a volunteer organization and funds are raised primarily through individual donations and fundraising events. They currently have 500+ individual “Angels” who have pledged to donate $20 or more per month and several corporate “Angels” who have pledged $500 or more annually. 100% of these funds go directly to patient needs.

To date they have given out over $1,700,000 in financial assistance and the need grows daily.. In 2008 they received a generous donation to purchase their first “Angel House”, where women who have lost their housing can live rent free while they are in treatment. They are currently assisting 75 women a month, with 56 children in these households. They assist women in Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego Counties and the surrounding areas. HEATHER SHELTON, Founder and managing director of OC Roller Girls

Hoping to provide women with a productive environment that encourages personal growth through sports, Heather Shelton founded OC Roller Girls. OCRG consists of a diverse team of multi-talented women who share dreams and victories on and off the track. The organization offers sports training and coaching, and gives members the opportunity to compete in team and individual events, which attract crowds of up to 1,000 people.

The most important lesson learned:
Dedication and passion can overcome any obstacle.

The next big step:
There are a few. We are starting a new skate school in the fall, so we can start teaching kids about roller-skating as a sport. We want to grow our fan base, so we can bring roller derby to a large audience. Everyone remembers it; now we want them to REexperience it. We are a strong group of women who can make a world of difference. Our Roll for a Cure – which raises funds for Breast Cancer Angels, always a big event – is in June.

Advice for other young professionals:
Find something you are truly passionate about, and just do that. Happiness costs less then you think.

What you do for fun:
Roller derby, of course! I’m hoping to learn how to surf soon.

If you could have dinner with anyone – alive or dead – who would it be and why?
I would like to meet the business manager of a major sports team, since I think we would have a lot to talk about.
